Saschiz · Transylvania · on the Via Transilvanica
An old Saxon house under the vines
Rooms, glamping and a garden that climbs into the hills above the village.
A lodge with a vine-covered porch, five rooms furnished with things that have lived here longer than we have, and a courtyard that ends in sky.
Saschiz 130 was built in 1928 and brought slowly back to life. Guests stay in the old lodge and the former stable; in summer, three bell tents go up on the terraces behind the courtyard. Everything is within walking distance of the village square — and of nothing else, which is rather the point.

The house
Built 1928. Restored by hand.
The rooms keep their timber ceilings, painted furniture and wool textiles; the bathrooms are new and private, one to each room. Downstairs there is a guest kitchen with a whitewashed hearth, a barn turned dining room, a wine cellar, and a living room with a fireplace for evenings that turn cold.
The rooms
Five rooms, no two alike
The Red Room
Warm, low-lit and a little theatrical — the most Transylvanian room in the house. A red-painted bed dressed in striped wool, folk rugs on the floor and an antique painted cabinet on the wall. The windows open onto the quiet of the courtyard.

The Cottage
Bright and calm: whitewash, old brick and morning light. A canopy over the bed, the original timber ceiling above and a blue-painted nightstand for your book. It looks out toward the garden side of the house.

The Green Room
Sage walls, lace curtains and the soft green light they make together. Two beds and a daybed make it the room for three, or for spreading out. The windows frame the vines in the courtyard.

The Loft
Tucked under the roof beams, up its own painted staircase. A hand-painted wardrobe, a chandelier and a bathroom in blue tile behind the yellow door. From up here, the rooftops of the village begin below the windowsill.

The Stable
The old stable of the house, beams and all, turned into the most rustic of the five. Antique wooden beds under a red wool blanket, and a sliding barn door instead of an ordinary one. It opens toward the back of the courtyard, where the hill begins.

Glamping
Three tents above the village
In summer, three bell tents stand on wooden decks on the hillside terraces, each with its own view over the rooftops of Saschiz. Showers and toilets are shared and rustic, the string lights come on at dusk, and the village goes quiet early.
Summer season only

The courtyard
A pool at the top of the garden
The seasonal pool sits on a deck above the garden, facing the valley. Below it: a lawn for doing nothing, a pergola table in the shade of the vines, a picnic and “beach” corner, and bicycles to borrow for the lanes around the village.
